Eczema & Dry Skin Conditions
Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a general term that describes a wide range of skin conditions having in common redness, swelling and itchiness. Eczema is classified in a number of ways:
| • | Location, such as hand eczema, fingertip eczema or cracked feet |
| • | Appearance, such as eczema craquele or discoid |
| • | Duration, such as acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) |
| • | Possible cause, such as contact allergen, irritant or varicose |
Overview Eczema takes many forms and affects young and old alike. The most common forms of eczema, classified by type, are outlined below:
| • | Asteatotic Dermatitis Caused by dry skin, particularly on the lower legs of elderly people. This is due to a reduction in sebum, the natural oil in skin that normally protects and moisturizes the skin. |
| • | Atopic Dermatitis Itchy rash most common on face and scalp, neck, inside of elbows, behind knees, and buttocks. Associated with allergies and asthma and tends to be inherited. Common in infants and toddlers, and may become less severe or disappear with age. |
| • | Contact Dermatitis An itchy rash caused when skin is exposed to an allergen or irritant such as Poison Ivy. Learn More > |
| • | Dyshidrotic Dermatitis (pompholyx or vesicular dermatitis) Small, intensely itchy blisters on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet. |
| • | Keratolysis Exfoliativa Peeling of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Often associated with sweaty palms and soles, and occurs most commonly during the summer. |
| • | Keratosis Pilaris A common condition causing rough, small, follicle-based spots most commonly seen over large portions of the upper arms, thighs and buttocks. Results in rough skin that can be itchy. |
| • | Nummular Dermatitis Coin-shaped patches of irritated skin, occurring sometimes after a skin injury or insect bite. |
| • | Stasis Dermatitis Red, irritated skin on the lower legs and is often associated with circulation problems. |
 | | | | Eczema is a skin condition with symptoms of redness, swelling and itchiness |
