Acupuncture

Acupuncture promotes healing, relieves pain and improves well-being by unblocking the vital energies that flow through your body, harmonizing and balancing your bodys "Chi" energies.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a healing system that originated in China approximately 3500 years ago. The main objective of acupuncture is to bring about balance and the flow of energy throughout the body to relieve pain, strengthen the immune system and balance, harmonize, and integrate body systems and their functions.

Fourteen major energy channels called meridians course through the body, including the head, arms, hands, legs, feet, torso and internal organs. A subtle energy called Chi circulates via the meridians to all parts of the body. Chi is the vital force that is critical to sound health and energy. Acupuncture treatments create a sense of deep relaxation, known as the "Chi Sensation" which indicates the body is using its own power to heal.

Using specialized needles, the Acupuncturist stimulates specific points along the course of the meridians. This stimulation helps restore the balance and flow of Chi so organs and body systems can return to homeostasis.

• Chronic Bronchitis
• Chronic Pain (Sciatica, Frozen Shoulder, Tennis Elbow etc.)
• Diarrhea or Constipation

FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE
First documented in Chinese medical literature in 221 B.C., Facial acupuncture has been revived at OHM as a gentle form of non-surgical facial rejuvenation. This specialized treatment targets points on the face and body to balance energy, enhance nutrient flow to the face, promote collagen production and stimulate muscles for a healthier, more youthful appearance. A relaxing facial is given before and after acupuncture using Chinese herbs to open pathways for best results.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is considered very safe. While it is a medical procedure that punctures the skin and underlying tissues, injuries and side effects are very rare, and if they do occur, they are usually minor.

All acupuncture needles are by law, sterile, one-use disposable needles. The needles come prepackaged and sterilized and are disposed of after one use.

What should I expect?
Before your treatment, your practitioner will ask questions about your general health as well as details about current symptoms. The tone and health of your skin, tongue, hair, teeth, and nails will be evaluated, and your practitioner will check your pulse in three spots on each wrist to determine the energy of your acupuncture channels.

What will I feel?
Acupuncture is experienced to be relatively painless; however, with correct stimulation, the movement of energy (Chi) may be felt.

Chi sensations vary widely and may be described as heaviness, distention, tingling, or electric at the site of insertion and/or may travel up or down the channel (energy pathway).

PRE AND POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACUPUNCTURE

Pre Acupuncture
• Eat before your visit, even if it is only a small snack.
• Drink room temperature water or tea.
• If you have long hair, bring something to keep it up.

Post Acupuncture
• Rest as much as possible. Avoid vigorous physical or mental work for the remainder of your treatment day.
• You may have discomfort at the site of insertion or temporary discoloration of the skin. Do not be alarmed as these will go away.
• Drink room temperature water or hot tea for the remainder of the day.
• Massage acupuncture ear points at least a minute each in the morning and at night. These points may be tender, but are an important part of the therapy. They should remain for three days. If they fall out do not try to reinsert.
