Gua Sha Therapy

Experience the healing powers of our deep, therapeutic Chinese massage therapy called Gua Sha. Relax and soothe sore muscles, reduce swelling and improve your general well-being. Each Gua Sha treatment is individually tailored to you and your unique state of energetic balance at the time of treatment.

WHAT IS GUA SHA?
Gua (pronounced gwa, meaning to rub) and Sha (pronounced shaw, meaning toxins) is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine dating back 2000 years. This ancient method of promoting Chi, blood circulation and removal of toxic heat, stagnant blood and lymph fluid from the body is an extremely effective method of improving your health.

Raising Sha removes blood stagnation considered pathogenic, promoting normal circulation and metabolic processes. After this therapeutic massage, you will experience immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, nausea, and everyday stress. Gua Sha is valuable in the prevention and treatment of acute infectious illnesses, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many other acute or chronic disorders.

Acupuncture is often combined with Gua Sha to help move the source of energy imbalance closer to the surface of the body. From here it can be moved out of the body by the massage.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Following an initial assessment for areas of increased or deficient energy flow in the body, a sequence of friction massage of the various meridians of the body is carried out. This will improve the flow of healing energy or Chi.

There are also techniques used to increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the tissues. The specific locations for treatment will be determined by your OHM practitioner.

Areas of bruising (Sha) will result for two or three days in those areas where the energy flows is being corrected. With later treatments, these areas of the body will no longer be tender or develop the bruising.

Treatments are best done weekly to allow the body to adjust to its new state of energy balance. Each subsequent treatment will differ from the ones before as your health improves.
